Why Accept EBT?

Electronic Benefits Transfer (EBT) payments open your business to over 42 million Americans who depend on SNAP benefits for essential purchases. Accepting EBT leads to increased customer loyalty, as shoppers appreciate businesses that welcome all payment types.

Benefits of Accepting EBT:

Attract More Customers

Accepting government benefit payments expands your customer base to include millions of Americans who rely on SNAP benefits for grocery purchases. These customers actively seek businesses that accept their benefit cards and often become preferred shopping destinations, especially valuable for convenience stores and small groceries competing with larger chains.

Grow Sales

Government benefit transactions translate directly to increased revenue. SNAP benefits are loaded monthly, creating predictable spending patterns. Benefit customers often shop multiple times per month and make supplemental cash purchases for non-eligible items, increasing average transaction values and overall store revenue.

Build Community Support

Accepting benefit payments demonstrates your commitment to serving all community members, positioning your business as a community partner. This inclusive approach strengthens local relationships and often leads to increased loyalty, positive word-of-mouth marketing, and potential community partnerships.

Understanding EBT
Cards and Usage

What is an EBT Card

An Electronic Benefits Transfer (EBT) card is a plastic payment card that works like a debit card, allowing recipients to access their government benefits electronically. The card contains a magnetic stripe and a chip that securely stores benefit account information and enables PIN-protected transactions.
State agencies issue EBT cards to individuals and families who qualify for government assistance programs, such as SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program) and TANF (Temporary Assistance for Needy Families). Each card is linked to the recipient’s benefit account and can only be used by the authorized cardholder.

FAQs

Using a benefit card at checkout is similar to using a debit card. Customers insert their card into the payment terminal, enter their confidential PIN, and select the desired benefit type. The system verifies that the purchase items are eligible for the selected benefit type and processes the transaction if sufficient benefits are available.
For SNAP benefits, only eligible food items can be purchased. In contrast, TANF benefits may have different usage restrictions, depending on state regulations. The POS system automatically identifies eligible items and prevents unauthorized purchases, ensuring compliance with program rules.

The benefit card application process begins with applying for the underlying benefit program (SNAP, TANF, etc.) through your state’s social services agency. Applications can typically be completed online, by phone, or in person at local offices.

Once benefit eligibility is established, the card is automatically issued and mailed to the recipient’s address. The card arrives with activation instructions and essential usage information, including the customer service number for questions or issues.

Benefit card activation typically requires calling the customer service number provided with the card or visiting the state’s website. Recipients need their Social Security number, date of birth, and card number to complete the activation process.

After activation, recipients create a confidential PIN that protects their benefits from unauthorized use. This PIN is required for all benefit transactions and should be kept secure to prevent benefit theft.

Cardholders can check their benefit balance through multiple methods, including calling the customer service number on their card, visiting the state website, or checking their balance at participating ATMs or retailers.
